COMMUNITY SERVICES- ORGANIZES
SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE IN NEED INCLUDING:
JOB COUNSELING AND REFERRAL FOR THE
UNEMPLOYED; SETTING UP FOOD BANKS
AND BLOOD DRIVES; COORDINATING
DISASTER RELIEF; AND WORKING WITH
COMMUNITY AGENCIES SUCH AS THE RED
CROSS AND UNITED WAY.

COMMITTEE ON POLITICAL
EDUCATION (COPE)-
WORKS TO INVOLVE
UNION MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE
POLITICAL EFFORT TO ELECT PUBLIC
OFFICIALS SYMPATHETIC TO NEEDS OF
WORKERS. THE COMMITTEE INTERVIEWS
CANDIDATES AND MAKES ENDORSEMENT
RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE COUNCIL,
PLANS THE COUNCIL'S POLITICAL BATTLE
PLAN INCLUDING STRATEGIES RELATING TO
VOTER REGISTRATION, EDUCATION OF UNION
MEMBERS ABOUT THE ISSUES AND
CANDIDATES AND GET-OUT-THE-VOTE
TACTICS.

EDUCATION- COORDINATES SKILLS-
BUILDING PROGRAMS FOR UNION LEADERS
AND ACTIVISTS AND HELPS EDUCATE THE
COMMUNITY ABOUT LABOR. COMMITTEE
ACTIVITIES MIGHT INCLUDE: A NEW
DELEGATE ORIENTATION PROGRAM;
ORGANIZING AN EDUCATION CONFERENCE
FOR THE COUNCIL; A
LABOR-IN-THE-SCHOOLS SPEAKERS
BUREAU; ASSISTING A UNION-SPONSORED
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM;
REVIEWING AND DISTRIBUTING UNION ISSUES
INFORMATION TO LEADERS AND ACTIVISTS.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE
(LAC)-
IS THE GRASSROOTS LOBBYING ARM
OF THE COUNCIL AT ALL LEVELS OF
GOVERNMENT. THE "BACK-HOME" WORK OF
LAC IS INDISPENSABLE TO THE
ACHIEVEMENT OF LABOR'S LEGISLATIVE
AGENDA. TO ASSURE LEGISLATIVE
ACCOUNTABILITY OF FEDERAL, STATE AND
LOCAL LEVEL POLITICIANS, THIS COMMITTEE,
IN CONCERT WITH THE STATE FEDERATION
AND THE AFL-CIO DEPARTMENT OF
LEGISLATION: INITIATES REGULAR CONTACT
WITH LAWMAKERS BY ARRANGING
FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS TO DISCUSS KEY
LEGISLATION, MAINTAINS VOTING RECORD
INFORMATION ON LEGISLATORS; AND
RECOMMENDS AND HELPS IMPLEMENT
SPECIFIC GRASSROOTS STRATEGIES- SUCH
AS POSTCARD OR CALL IN CAMPAIGNS- TO
INCREASE PRESSURE ON WAVERING
LEGISLATURES.

ORGANIZING- COUNCILS AND THEIR
DELEGATES ARE IN A PIVOTAL GRASSROOTS
POSITION TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE IN
ORGANIZING THE UNORGANIZED. TO DO THIS
AN ORGANIZING COMMITTEE MAY: SET-UP A
ROUND TABLE FORUM FOR LOCAL UNION
ORGANIZERS TO COORDINATE STRATEGY
AND DISCUSS ORGANIZING TARGETS;
ESTABLISH AN OUTREACH PROGRAM, SUCH
AS THROUGH NEWSPAPER ADS, TO IDENTIFY
POTENTIAL ORGANIZING LEADS; AND
RECRUIT AND TRAIN VOLUNTEER
ORGANIZERS TO DO LEAFLETTING OR TO
MAKE HOUSE CALLS ON NON-UNION
WORKERS DURING AN ORGANIZING
CAMPAIGN.

STRIKE/CONTRACT SUPPORT
COMMITTEE-
HELPS AFFILIATES PRIOR TO
OR DURING TOUGH COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
NEGOTIATIONS AND, WHEN NECESSARY,
LENDS ASSISTANCE DURING A STRIKE. A
COUNCIL'S STRIKE SUPPORT STRATEGY MAY
INCLUDE: PLANNING PICKET LINE SUPPORT,
RALLIES, BOYCOTTS OR FUNDRAISERS;
ORGANIZING FOOD COLLECTION FOR
FAMILIES OF STRIKING WORKERS;
DEVELOPING A MEDIA PROGRAM; AND
REACHING OUT TO COMMUNITY GROUPS AND
PUBLIC OFFICIALS.

OTHER COUNCIL COMMITTEES- MIGHT
INCLUDE: UNION LABEL OR " UNION YES"- TO
PROMOTE UNION MADE PRODUCTS OR UNION
ESTABLISHMENTS; RETIREES- TO
ENCOURAGE THE INVOLVEMENT OF THESE
KNOWLEDGEABLE AND SEASONED UNION
WORKERS; RELIGION AND LABOR- TO
PROMOTE CLOSER LINKS BETWEEN
ORGANIZED LABOR AND THE CLERGY;
SOCIAL/CULTURAL- TO PLAN EVENTS FOR
THE COUNCILS ACTIVISTS AND THEIR
FAMILIES.
